Jaket Kulit

Salah satu komoditas andalan dari pengrajin kulit di Kabupaten Garut adalah produksi pakaian jadi dari kulit dan jaket kulit sapi (agak keras) dan domba (lentur), yang di kalangan tertentu khususnya di lingkungan bisnis fashion terkenal dengan sebutan “Jaket Kulit Garut”.
Faktor pendukung terwujudnya sentra industri jaket kulit ini diantaranya adalah ketersediaan bahan baku. Sumber bahan baku di Kabupaten Garut cukup melimpah dengan lokasi yang strategis, berdekatan bahkan menyatu dalam lingkungan sentra industri kecil penyamakan kulit.

Selain itu letak geografis Kabupaten Garut yang dekat dengan kota Bandung sebagai pusat perdagangan pakaian jadi dan Jakarta sebagai pusat perdagangan nasional, memungkinkan pelaku bisnis untuk terus serius meningkatkan produksi jaket kulit karena mudah dipasarkan.

Saat ini di sektor industri pakaian jadi dari kulit di Kabupaten Garut tergabung 417 unit usaha formal dan non formal, dengan menyerap kurang lebih 2.953 tenaga kerja. Dalam proses pendataan Dinas Perindustrian Perdagangan dan Penanaman Modal Kabupaten Garut pernah tercatat jumlah produksi per tahun Jaket Kulit Mulus adalah sekitar 50.000 potong dan Jaket Kulit Sambung sekitar 200.000 potong.. Adanya permintaan terhadap jaket kulit yang terus meningkat dari daerah di luar Kabupaten Garut (pasaran lokal maupun nasional) seperti dari Bandung, Jakarta atau beberapa kota di Jawa Tengah, Jawa Timur, Bali maupun Sumatera telah mendorong pengrajin jaket kulit di Kabupaten Garut tumbuh dan berkembang lebih cepat dibandingkan pengrajin kulit di daerah-daerah lainnya.

Selain memenuhi permintaan konsumen lokal dan nasional, Jaket Kulit Garut juga sudah merambah ke pasar internasional, seperti Singapura, Malaysia, Taiwan, Jepang, dll. Data terakhir, jaket kulit Garut diekspor ke Singapura, Malaysia, Taiwan dan Australia dengan volume mencapai 9.488 potong senilai $448.464. Ini menunjukan peningkatan ekpor yang cukup membaik dimana volume ekspor sebelumnya mencapai 5.100 potong senilai US$258.651,0

Hambatan yang dihadapi adalah teknologi pengolahan untuk percepatan proses produksi dan lemahnya pengendalian kualitas terhadap komoditas barang yang dihasilkan sehingga dapat mempengaruhi kinerja citra komoditas yang sudah terbentuk. Jika hambatan ini tidak diatasi, maka pengrajin kulit Garut akan kalah bersaing dengan pengrajin kulit dari daerah lain yang ironisnya justru mengolah kulit tersamak dari Garut.

Saat ini, sebagian besar pengrajin jaket kulit berada di kompleks industri kulit Sukaregang di Kecamatan Garut Kota. Data terakhir yang diperoleh berkenaan dengan industri pengolahan pakaian jadi dari kulit di Kabupaten Garut adalah sebagai berikut:
